Target has been intensely criticized when one of their sweater designs for Christmas seemingly mocked people who are diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder.\n
The sweater had \u2018Obsessive Christmas Disorder\u2019 on it, and a photo of it was posted online by Twitter user named Reign Murphy, who showed her great disdain for the retail chain\u2019s lack of sensitivity.\n The store received backlash from customers who felt the sweater, which had the phrase \u201cObsessive Christmas Disorder\u201d written on the front, belittled and mocked a serious mental disorder.\n \u201cAs someone with OCD I\u2019d really appreciate it if you didn\u2019t sell my illness as a fashion statement,\u201d Twitter user Reign Murphy tweeted alongside a photo of her holding up the sweater.\n Others reacted similarly to the controversy, with several blasting the retail giant for mocking a \u201cserious mental illness.\u201d\n “Today at Target I saw a sweater that said ‘OCD Obsessive Christmas Disorder’\u2026why is trivializing a mental disorder so widely accepted?\u201d one tweet about the sweater read.\n Target ultimately responded to the backlash with an apology, but stopped short of removing the item from its stores.\n \u201cWe never want to disappoint our guests and we apologize for any discomfort,\u201d spokesman Josh Thomas said in the statement. “We currently do not have plans to remove this sweater.”\n \u201cThe truth is that millions of women and young girls are taken as \u2018trophies\u2019 every year in war, sex trafficking, slavery, and rape,\u201d the petition said, Fortune reported. \u201cLabeling any person as a \u2018Trophy\u2019 is demeaning their humanity and objectifying them as a tangible object that can be bought, used, and disposed of.\u201d\n Target responded to that controversy by apologizing for offending customers.\n \u201cIt is never our intention to offend anyone,\u201d the company\u2019s statement read. \u201cThese shirts are intended as a fun wink and we have received an overwhelmingly positive response from our guests.\u201d\n What do you think about this Christmas sweater?
