Jodie wrote, \u00abHi, Echo Woven, I\u2019m writing to\u00a0you because\u00a0I know that you have a\u00a0big audience from all over the world, and\u00a0I would like to\u00a0hear other people\u2019s opinions about my\u00a0tough and controversial situation, and also about my\u00a0categorical decision which is\u00a0now very much criticized by\u00a0many of\u00a0my\u00a0family members.\u00bb\n
The woman began her story, saying that she has made a\u00a0decision to\u00a0cut all ties with her parents-in-law, and she even forbade them to\u00a0approach her kids. Jodie wrote, \u00abWe were once very close with my in-laws. They seemed very nice, cordial and very hospitable people from the start. My husband Jake and I have been married for over a decade now, and we have 3 wonderful kids together. During all this time, my parents-in-law have been extremely nice to all of our kids, and the children enjoyed their really nice relationships with their grandparents. As far as we know, they have only warm, happy memories with grandma and grandpa.\n\n

I\u00a0lost my\u00a0own parents due to\u00a0a\u00a0bad accident many years ago, and for\u00a0me, it\u00a0was important that the kids should have at\u00a0least one set of\u00a0grandparents, who would spoil them and love them unconventionally. My\u00a0in-laws coped with this task pretty well, and\u00a0I was satisfied with how their relationship with their grandkids was developing over time.\u00bb\n\n\n\n\n

However, Jodie\u2019s husband seemed to\u00a0be\u00a0skeptic about this idyllic family picture. Jodie goes on\u00a0with her story, saying, \u00abOne day, Jake came home from work in\u00a0a\u00a0really bad mental state. I\u2019ve never seen him crying before, and I\u2019ve never seen him so\u00a0frustrated and desperate. I\u00a0asked him about what happened, and he\u00a0said he\u00a0had a\u00a0nervous breakdown because of\u00a0some serious problems at\u00a0work. But I\u00a0had that gut feeling that there was something more serious than problems at\u00a0work, so\u00a0I insisted that we\u00a0should sit and talk.\u00bb\n
Jodie revealed the reason for Jake\u2019s long-term depression and anxiety. The woman explained, \u00abI was expecting that Jake would tell me something about his present problems, but he suddenly started talking about his childhood. I was so shocked to reveal that my dear, my loving and caring parents-in-law were actually the main reason why Jake has been struggling so much during all his adulthood.\n

That means they would act like he\u00a0was the grown-up person in\u00a0the family, not them, and they often made him listen to\u00a0their adult problems, they expected him to\u00a0provide emotional support for them. He\u00a0was expected to\u00a0be\u00a0a\u00a0source of\u00a0comfort and reassurance, not them.\n
Jodie wrote, \u00abJake told me\u00a0how his dad was complaining to\u00a0him, a\u00a010-year-old boy at\u00a0the time, that he\u00a0lost his job because of\u00a0his colleague\u2019s intrigues, and he\u00a0would share everything in\u00a0details, and Jake had to\u00a0sit and listen. They also made Jake take part in\u00a0managing household finances, he\u00a0was even responsible for caring for his younger siblings. This all was especially challenging for Jake, as\u00a0he\u00a0obviously did not have that emotional maturity or\u00a0life experience to\u00a0manage his own emotions, let alone those of\u00a0his adult parents.\u00bb\n
Jodie added, \u00abI\u00a0find it\u00a0appalling and deeply inappropriate, that my\u00a0in-laws have been so\u00a0toxic over the years and that they pretended to\u00a0be\u00a0kind to\u00a0our kids. I\u00a0called them right after\u00a0I found out all the details of\u00a0Jake\u2019s childhood, but they said he\u00a0was lying to\u00a0me. Then, I\u00a0just told them they shouldn\u2019t approach our kids and that they\u2019re unwanted guests in\u00a0our house. My\u00a0MIL was crying and asking me\u00a0not to\u00a0jump into decisions, but\u00a0I didn\u2019t want to\u00a0listen.
\nI\u00a0saw with my\u00a0own eyes what they did to\u00a0Jake with their \u201eparentifying\u201c and\u00a0I would never wish my\u00a0kids to\u00a0have to\u00a0face the same dirty methods from my\u00a0in-laws. I\u2019m extremely judged and criticized by\u00a0the rest of\u00a0our family members, but\u00a0I don\u2019t care, as\u00a0soon as\u00a0I\u2019m guarded by\u00a0my\u00a0maternal wish to\u00a0provide my\u00a0kids with a\u00a0healthy environment to\u00a0live\u00a0in.
