Ben Armitage, an optometrist of 14 years to the family said:\n

\u201cHe came in to see me and on the Friday night he\u2019d got a hold of a laser pen and unfortunately shined it in his eyes for a very brief period of time\u201d\n

Ben took a photo\u00a0of the boy\u2019s eyes and discovered that he had burned his retinas and\u00a0irrevocably damaged his eyes.\n

Ben had said that:\n

\u201cUnfortunately, that\u2019s the area where your detailed central vision takes place and therefore it\u2019s had somewhat of an exaggerated effect on how much sight he\u2019s lost\u201d\n

The damage occurred immediately\u00a0that the boy pointed the laser into his eyes, his vision was impaired exactly at that moment the laser light\u00a0shone on the back of his eyes, he didn\u2019t feel any pain but the\u00a0damage had been done.\n

The part of his eyes\u00a0that were damaged was an area\u00a0called the macula, in cases like this that meant that the blindness was very\u00a0likely to be permanent.\n

The optometrist,\u00a0Ben, was hopeful\u00a0that some of his vision\u00a0may return\u00a0once the swelling had subsided a little, however the boy had to be prepared for the fact that he may\u00a0only live his life with 25 percent vision.\n

The Chief Executive of Optometry in Tasmania, Geoff Squibb, has since warned parents about the dangers of laser pointers and\u00a0especially in relation to children, who don\u2019t always really understand the gravity and seriousness of or trying foolish things like\u00a0shining a laser into thier eyes.\n

He says:\n

\u201cParents are better off trying to warn children of them after this particular case where the future of a young person has been seriously affected.\u201d\n

The repercussions of this\u00a0can be absolutely devastating, what looks like a harmless toy is in fact a\u00a0\u2018silent destroyer\u2019 of retinal components of your vision.\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
