Find out if it&rsquo;s worth repairing or if it&rsquo;s time to start shopping for a new one\n<p>It can be incredibly frustrating when your washing machine breaks. After all, most of us only have a finite amount of clean clothing. And who wants to deal with this problem, anyway? Thankfully, not all washing-machine problems are indications that your appliance is reaching the end of its life. In fact, many issues just require a quick repair. And here\u2019s another bit of good news: You can prevent your washing machine from an outright breakdown if you know the signs that it\u2019s about to malfunction\u2014and you don\u2019t regularly engage in a few common behaviors that can shorten its life. So, if your washing machine is exhibiting a few of the following problematic symptoms, it\u2019s time to call a technician. If it\u2019s exhibiting many of them, you should probably start shopping.\n</p><h2>It makes loud and excessive noises\n</h2><p>Does the drum of your washing machine sound like someone is literally beating it? If you\u2019re hearing loud noises on a regular basis, it\u2019s a bad sign, according to Ron Shimek, president of\u00a0Mr. Appliance. \u201cThis could be due to a problem with the motor or even the drum. Do the water levels look low, even for larger loads? Or is your washing machine leaking? These are symptoms of a larger problem. \u201cFor washers, this may mean that the water isn\u2019t draining, the drum doesn\u2019t fill up with water or there is some kind of leak,\u201d says Shimek. Water issues are a definite sign you need to speak with a technician.\n</p><h2>It isn\u2019t cleaning your clothes very well\n</h2><p>If your clothing isn\u2019t getting as clean as it once did (check the bottom of your socks), your machine may be on its way out. Do you need to run the same load for multiple cycles? And this is something that you should deal with immediately. \u201cPutting off appliance repair may seem like the best way to save money,\u201d Shimek says. \u201cBut if your water or electric bills are especially high, it could be an indication that the appliance is malfunctioning beyond repair.\u201d The bottom line: A broken washing machine can drain your bank account over time while buying a new one will cost you up-front but can save you money in the long run.\n<h2>You constantly overload the machine\n</h2><p>While it\u2019s OK to sneak in an extra T-shirt, regularly packing it with a ton of stuff to avoid doing multiple loads is a bad idea. \u201cDon\u2019t overload the machine,\u201d says Shimek. \u201cThis puts a strain on the motor, which will cause it to wear out faster.\u201d The time of the year and the location of your washing machine can also affect how it works.\n</p><p><img loading='\"lazy\"' decoding='\"async\"' class='\"' wp-image-9877 aligncenter src="%5C%22http:%5C/%5C/echowoven.com%5C/wp-content%5C/uploads%5C/2021%5C/06%5C/unnamed-1-300x200.jpg%5C%22" alt='\"\"' width='\"513\"' height='\"342\"' title='\"\"' srcset='\"https:\/\/echowoven.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/unnamed-1-300x200.jpg' https: sizes='\"auto,'>\n</p><h2>You use too much detergent\n</h2><p>Using a little bit of extra detergent on a super dirty load is fine every now and then, but doing it all the time can wear out your washing machine. According to\u00a0<em>Consumer Reports, too much detergent can prolong the rinse cycle. Why is this a big deal, aside from probably increasing your electricity bill? The more you run a washer, the closer it gets to the end of its life. So, be sure to use the proper amount of detergent, especially if you have a high-efficiency (HE) model.\n<h2>There\u2019s an odor that just won\u2019t go away\n</h2><p>It\u2019s hard to believe your clothing is clean when your washing machine smells dirty. And while this probably isn\u2019t something that you particularly want to deal with, it might have nothing to do with how your washing machine is functioning. Front-loading models tend to breed mold and mildew. To prevent odors, wipe away excess moisture after the cycle is complete and keep the door open, if possible. You should also clean your washing machine on a monthly basis with hot water and bleach.\n</p><h2>Your washing machine is ancient\n</h2><p>Put simply, washing machines have a finite lifespan. \u201cAs appliances get older, they tend to break down more often or work harder, causing them to stop working,\u201d says Shimek. According to a\u00a02018 survey from\u00a0<em>Consumer Reports, most major appliance manufacturers say you can expect a washing machine to last for at least ten years. According to\u00a0ABC News, 21 people reported that their washing machines exploded. If you have a Samsung, make sure you don\u2019t have a recalled model, and if you do, replace it immediately.
